Understanding Tax Extensions

More Time to File.
Not More Time to Pay.

A federal tax filing extension is a routine way to obtain additional time to complete your individual income tax return. But filing and payment deadlines are different.

Filing Deadline
Generally October 15

For most calendar-year individual taxpayers, a timely federal extension generally moves the filing deadline from April 15 to October 15.

This gives you additional time to gather documents, resolve missing information, and complete your return.

Payment Deadline
Generally April 15

An extension does not extend the deadline to pay federal income tax.

If you expect to owe, you should estimate and pay the tax by the original payment deadline to help reduce potential penalties and interest.

Important: A filing extension generally does not require a special explanation, but it must be obtained on time. State tax extension and payment requirements can differ from federal rules. Certain taxpayers may qualify for special deadline relief.

Common Reasons to Extend

Sometimes the Best Tax Return
Is the One You Don't Rush.

Filing an accurate return requires complete information. There are many legitimate reasons to prepare a return after the traditional April deadline.

Waiting for K-1s

Partnership, S corporation, estate, and trust tax information may arrive later in the filing season.

Complex Investments

Corrected brokerage statements, stock compensation, and investment activity may require additional review.

Rental Properties

Rental income, expenses, depreciation, and supporting records may take additional time to organize.

Multiple States

Part-year residency, nonresident filings, and income allocated among states can add complexity.

Missing Documents

Sometimes the right approach is to wait for complete and corrected information before filing.

Scheduling Flexibility

A valid extension can provide additional time to schedule professional preparation.

The TaxReturn.cpa Approach

A Scheduled Process.
Not a Last-Minute Scramble.

TaxReturn.cpa is designed around reserved production dates. Instead of promising immediate preparation, we schedule returns into a structured workflow.

1

See Your Price

Complete our online questionnaire to determine your preparation level and applicable pricing.

2

Get Scheduled

Complete your engagement and payment requirements, then reserve your production date.

3

Get Ready

Complete your organizer and upload requested documents through our secure portal.

We prepare and review your return, then provide it for your approval and filing authorization.

Your production date matters. Required documents and organizer information must be complete when production begins. If essential information is missing, your date may need to be released and rescheduled.

Our normal delivery target is the end of the third week following your scheduled production start date, assuming complete information and no unexpected complications. This is a target, not a guaranteed filing date.

Extension Filing & Responsibilities

Will TaxReturn.cpa File My Extension?

For accepted clients who engage us sufficiently before the original filing deadline, we can generally prepare and electronically submit a federal zero-payment extension using available information and required authorizations.

Coastline and Meridian Members

Coastline and Meridian include automatic extension handling under the procedures and eligibility requirements established in the applicable membership agreement. This means the firm handles qualifying extension needs as part of the membership process, rather than requiring a separate tax preparation engagement for that service.

Automatic extension handling is not a guarantee that an extension will be filed in every circumstance. The firm must have an accepted engagement, sufficient required information and authorizations, and adequate time to act before the applicable deadline. The membership agreement governs the service.

Preparation Only Clients

Extension filing for Preparation Only clients depends on the accepted engagement, timing, required information, authorizations, and applicable deadlines. It should not be assumed that an extension has been filed unless the firm confirms its acceptance.

Simply visiting our website, completing a pricing questionnaire, or requesting services does not trigger an extension filing. A prospective client is not covered by an engagement that has not been accepted.

Engaging Close to April 15?

If a new engagement is accepted within five business days of the original filing deadline, we will make reasonable efforts to assist with an extension when appropriate, but we cannot guarantee that it will be filed on time.

If you have not received confirmation that an extension has been accepted, do not assume one has been filed. You remain responsible for ensuring your filing and payment obligations are satisfied.

Already Have an Extension?

You can still use TaxReturn.cpa for preparation during the extended filing season, subject to engagement acceptance and available production dates.

What About State Extensions?

State requirements vary. Some states recognize federal extensions while others have separate rules, forms, or payment requirements. Any applicable state extension obligations should be evaluated separately.

Tax Preparation After April 15

You Can Still Hire a CPA
After the April Deadline.

Tax preparation does not stop on April 15.

If you have a valid filing extension, your return can generally be completed during the extension period without the federal late-filing penalty, provided it is filed by the extended deadline. Payment-related penalties and interest may still apply.

Even if you missed the original deadline without an extension, preparing and filing your return remains important. Depending on your circumstances, late-filing or late-payment charges may apply.

TaxReturn.cpa offers preparation appointments throughout the year, subject to availability and the types of returns we accept.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Filing
Taxes on Extension

Does filing a tax extension increase my audit risk?

Filing an extension is a routine tax procedure. There is no general reason to conclude that a properly filed extension, by itself, increases the likelihood of an IRS audit.

Do I need a special reason to request an extension?

Generally, no. Most individual taxpayers can request an automatic federal filing extension without explaining why additional time is needed.

Can I file my taxes after April 15 without an extension?

Yes, a return can still be filed after the original deadline. However, if no timely extension was obtained, late-filing penalties may apply. The consequences depend on whether tax is owed and other circumstances.

Do I have to pay my taxes when I request an extension?

An extension does not generally postpone the payment deadline. You should estimate and pay any federal income tax due by the original deadline. You can request a filing extension without making a payment, but unpaid tax may accrue penalties and interest.

Can TaxReturn.cpa prepare my return during the summer?

Yes. We schedule individual tax preparation throughout the year, subject to available production dates and engagement acceptance.

What if my K-1 hasn't arrived?

A timely extension can provide additional time to obtain necessary tax documents. Your required information must still be complete before your scheduled production begins.

Will TaxReturn.cpa automatically submit Form 4868 for me?

Coastline and Meridian include automatic extension handling for qualifying members under the applicable membership procedures. Preparation Only extension filing depends on the accepted engagement and circumstances. In all cases, required information, authorizations, and deadlines apply. Completing the pricing questionnaire alone does not trigger filing. Do not assume an extension has been filed until its acceptance has been confirmed.

Does an extension also cover my state income tax return?

Not necessarily. State extension and payment rules differ. Some states automatically recognize a federal extension; others have additional requirements.

How long will my tax return take?

Our normal target is delivery by the end of the third week following your reserved production start date, assuming complete documents and no unexpected complications. Actual timing can vary.
